Little Folks

Dear followers,

I would really really love to get my hand on some Little Folks Voile by
the very lovely Anna Maria Horner.

Hawthorne Threads has *almost* the whole collection and it's on sale.

Unfortunately, they don't cut FQs and I don't want to buy 1/2y
(ok I do. But it's too expensive).

So, if any of you were interested in splitting 1/2yards with me so we could both get FQs,
I would be very very happy!

I'm sure your husbands, boyfriend of whoever you live with
would be very grateful too since voile makes very very soft quilts.

With all my love,
Marika xxx

That's what I would get. What is not circled is what they don't have anymore.

p.s : if nobody wants to share, I'll probably end up buying 1/2 yards anyway.
I'll be mad at myself for about 0.00001 minute for doing that but then I'll be
excited to get to play with this lovely fabric.

p.s 2 : it would be approximately $65 each to split a 1/2 yard bundle.

The Art Student Tote

The other day, I saw the Art Student Tote on someone's blog and
I loved it so much that I HAD TO have one.
And I knew exactly what fabric I would use so I bought the pattern
and waited very patiently for it to arrive...
(it went from Atlanta to Miami (???) and finally here but it didn't bring the sun with him)

First of all, I love it.
I have no idea what I will do with it but I love it.
It's big, looks very well done and the pattern is very well written.
Not once I had to stop, scratch my head and figure out what to do !!

I used Yarn Dyed Essex Linen in black for the main exterior fabric and the two purple prints are by Lourdes Sanchez. I bought them a while ago and was very happy to use them because they were always meant to be used in a bag.

I made the same modifications as Holly's to make the bag a bit more sturdy.
It means that I used interfacing on pretty much every piece of the pattern and I added fusible fleece to the handles and the exterior of the bag.
I love that it stands on it's own and I feel like it'll last for a long time :)

Just to show you how big it is, I *tried* to take a picture of my cats in there.
I had to give them temptations and the picture is still blury but it makes me laugh
because this means that my bag can hold 30lbs of cat !

btw, I'm now on Instagram because I bought myself an Iphone !!
If you want to follow me, I'm here !
Let me know who you are so I can follow you too :)

A Lovely Year of Finishes - April

I promise, things will go back to normal (me posting more often) very soon.
I finished my intership last Friday and only have 3 more weeks left of school.

After that, I'll be SEWING !!! Yay :)

Anyway. I will have to finish my April goal since it's for a swap and I have to send it before the end of the month. Easy peasy.

I was really excited to get my partner in the Modern She Made swap.
We have similar taste and I know her a little bit, which makes it even more fun !

She wanted a mini quilt, pillow or sewing machine cover and that's what I settled for since
I've never made one.

This was my initial fabric pull - scrappy, bright colors.

And I made this with it
(of course I ended up using only a few prints)

I used some white on white print for the background because I thought it would add some interest.

Now, I'm stuck because I have no idea how to quilt the thing !
Any idea/suggestions are very welcome :)

A Lovely Year of Finishes - March

I feel like those posts are the only one I do right now, don't you ?
But I'm not too worried since I'll be officially done with my second year in just 3 short weeks.

I couldn't be happier !

My March goal was to finish my Scrappy Trip Around the World quilt.
Well, it's not finished.
I made the back and it's basted and I even began quilting it with swirls you guys ! Swirls !
But I didn't like it so I unpicked what I had done.

And I'm back to where I was a few weeks ago.. wondering how to quilt the damn thing.

Just as a reminder, here's the top :

Now I have been sewing this month so I'll show you all that very very soon!

In the meantime, Happy Easter Holidays (to everyone who celebrates it) :)

Beginnings

There is something about starting a new quilt that is so exciting.
And I get to do just that in the next few days.

And I know I will want to spend every waking minute in my already messy sewing room.
This quilt is for the young woman who made my business cards (that I should have very soon!),
my Facebook Page banner, my labels, etc.
We did a little trade and it's a treat for me to be able to make her a quilt.
She is so so so talented !

So this little mosaic was my inspiration.
Feathers, animals, wood, those were the three most important words.

From this, we played with fabric and we able to get to this little stack that I received just last night !

I added a few prints from my stash but the "vibe" is still the same.
It's going to be something so relaxing.

The design will really let the fabric speak in this quilt.
Talking about this quilt and looking at the fabric makes me feel so calm. It's really funny.
And definitely something I never experienced while making a quilt.

Soo to new quilts !

WIP

Last night, I was finishing a pillow cover and I thought
"Hey ! I could write a WIP post for tomorrow" (thinking we were only Thursday).
And then I realized it was already Wednesdat and it was too dark outside for me to take pictures...

So here it is, my work in progress post, one day late.

1. I basted my Scrappy Trip Around the World quilt.
I still don't know how to quilt it...

2. I just finished piecing my February quilt (for the Happiness Circle).
The thing is, it's too small. I would need it to be at least 70"+ long.

I don't want to make another 4 blocks so I'm thinking about adding a border.

Print or solid ??

3. I made one of the two blocks I have to do for March and I LOVE the colors so much !

4. And last but not least, I made this little pillow cover last night for a "customer".
She wanted something for her mother in law.
She said : feminine, flowers, nothing too bold, yellow and orange.

I think I accomplished just that, don't you think ?

I still have a very sunny sewing day ahead of me in a clean sewing room
(that's what I was doing at 6:45 this morning !).

What about you ??

3.16.2013

Better late than never !

I realized that I never showed you the quilt I made for my sister (for Christmas) !!
Today IS the day :)

I warn you, these pictures are absolutely terrible. They were taken inside and the sun wasn't shining very bright anymore outside.

Also, for some reason, this quilt is incredibly hard to photograph !
Maybe it's all that red ?
Anyway, she loves it, I only gave it to her a few days late and it looks gorgeous in person so I don't care that much about the pictures (I do, but just a little)

This pattern is called "Storm at Sea" and depending on how you place the fabric, it can look very different!
If it hadn't been for my sister, I would have just let that quilt in a bin forever because I paper pieced the whole thing (measurments are 60"x72"). At the end, it was hell.

Can you imagine removing all that paper ? There are 99 blocks in there and they all  have at least 5 pieces so that's over 500 little pieces of paper I had to rip.
Luckily, my boyfriend helped just a little bit :)

For the back, I used two AMH prints that reminds me of my sister and another that
we found in a quilt shop and that she liked a lot.

I was so so so happy to finish it ! And it was worth all the frustration because my sister
is one of my most favorite person in this world :)
And now, everyone I love the most has a quilt made from me : my mom (4!), my sister, my grandparents and my boyfriend.

You've all heard that Google Reader will "die" ? I'm sad. I love GR.
Did you know you can import all the blogs you follow from GR to Bloglovin ? It makes it all so easy !
In the meantime, if you want to follow on Bloglovin, here's my blog :

I also added a widget that allows you to easily follow me there :)

Divided Baskets

I'm usually not one that likes to do twice the same thing but this basket is so easy and fast and fun to make that I couldn't resist making another one.

Of course, the best part is to actually choose fabric and try to picture what it could look like with this binding instead of this one and with this fabric for the handles instead of another one.
But I love that part. And for this first basket, my boyfriend actually helped me ! Can you believe ?

I decided to stop hoarding and just use that pretty HR fabric.
I only used interfacing since this fabric is a little thicker than regular quilting cotton and it holds up pretty well !

For the lining, I used this dots fabric that I was going to give away.
Even if the match is not perfect, I'm happy with how well they look near one another :)

And I don't know if you heard but this basket is HUGE. Seriously. My two cats could probably fit in there. Ok, maybe not since they are a little fat but you could put two puppies in there !

For the second one, I was inspired by our March Bee Blocks.
I also used some fabric that had been sitting on the shelves for too long - Out to Sea !

I have no idea what I will put in this one but with the amount of crap in my sewing room, I'm sure it'll be full in no time :)

I also got myself a brand new cutting mat (my old one was about to split in half and it was all wavy), some thread (A LOT - buy one, get one free, I couldn't pass) and some pretty fabric that I can't wait to show you !
Luckily, I ordered it from Hawthorne Threads so it should be there pretty soon since they are always really fast at shipping.

Little projects

It's Spring Break, or it was since I'm working all weekend and have to go back to school on Tuesday.
I would probably be bored if I had to stay home all year long but man do I enjoy my time here !
Sewing all day, watching new series, doing a little laundry here and there, adding fabric to my virtual shopping cart and wish I was rich enough to buy everything I want.

The good thing is that in only 6 and a half weeks, I'll get to do that for another 4 months :)
AND the weather will be warmer. I can't wait.

But back to sewing !
I finished my STATW quilt top the other day.

I hanged it in my bedroom to take a picture the other day and it's still there  ! And the more I look at it, the more I like it. I wouldn't mind selling it but it would be ok to keep it.
(and I just noticed there is a mistake. first block from the right, second row from the bottom... might stay that way!)
I must say, I like having something on the wall.

Which leads me to : I want to make a little quilt for this wall space.
I'm thinking aqua/teal, yellow and grey. I just love this color combination so much.
Aqua, yellow and grey
Aqua,coral and grey

Aqua, coral, yellow and grey

I just don't know which one I like the best.. What about you ??

And I made a few more pieces of clothing for my cute little niece yesterday !
This is what I've got so far.

I added the little skirt, a pair of shorts and the Ayashe blouse bu Figgy's pattern.
I had a bit of a problem with the blouse because I didn't cut my pattern correctly so the  collar was too small for the top and I had to improvise. I can't wait to make a long sleeved version to see if it works better now :)

A Lovely Year of Finishes - March

I've been a really bad blogger lately !
I hope you forgive me.
It's just that I don't have anything to show so..

My goal for this month is to finish my Scrappy Trip Around the World quilt.
I'm hoping to piece the top today as I only have 9 blocks left to make.

 This was my scrap pile.
And even after this, I don't feel making this quilt made a difference in the amount of scraps I have.

Wish me luck !!

I am linking up with Shanna today !

Juliet

No, we're not having a baby girl.
Or a new cat.

Juliet is the name of this lovely machine :

It was my birthday yesterday. I'm now an old 24 years old lady.
My family came over for dinner and we had a very nice evening together.
And my mom suprised me with this !!

You should have seen her face. She was SO proud of herself !
And I just could not believe it.

And it's HUGE.
I'm going to keep the old one for my sister.
She said that she would love to learn how to make clothes. I'm not the best teacher, but I know how to follow a pattern :)

Ohh and it went well with the kids at school.
I started teaching on my second day. And it was my first time ever teaching !
I'm still alive and I still want to go, which is good !

That's about it. Hope you all have a good day.
I'm sure you all know where I will spend my day !

A Lovely Year of Finishes

Since I didn't do well last month, I decided to pick something really easy for this month.

I actually finished this bag like 2 days after posting about it !

It's for a girl in my class. She picked the purple and aqua fabric and I suggested the solid aqua and green woodgrain to go with.

I changed the handles because she wanted a  longer strap and two shorter ones.
I could have sewn then to the bag but I don't know, it didn't look good in my head.
So the handles are attached to the bag with buttons and she can change them whenever she wants !

I can now start thinking about my March project !

Here is my goal setting post.

The Everything Bag by Amy Butler (this is kind of a review)

So my cousin in pregnant with her first child (a boy!) and a few months ago, I told her that if she needed something handmade, it would be my pleasure to make something for her.

A few days later, she told me she needed a diaper bag so I went hunting for the perfect one.
She settled on the Everything Bag by Amy Butler (pattern is in her Little Stitches For Little Ones book).

I read a few reviews before I started and I was a bit afraid because you know, it's an Amy Butler pattern !
But all in all, it went really well.

I'd say it took me between 3h30 and 4h to make. It's not that bad :)

The only part I had to read a few times was when you need to make the divider. But aside from that, it's pretty easy to follow if you take the time to read the instruction well before doing anything.

I made a few changes :
- I didn't use Peltex. For the divider, I used two layers of cotton duck instead and for the bottom panel, I used one layer of cotton duck and fusible fleece. It's probably not as stiff as it should be but the bag stand on it's own (and it was probably easier to sew!).

- I made the straps longer and wider (6"Wx27"L instead of 4"Wx18"L). I like it.

- I made a zippered pocket on one side because that's what she wanted.
If I ever make another one with a pocket, I would make the pocket wider and higher.
But we learn from our "mistakes" don't we ?

I would probably add one front pocket too.
Not that you need more space in the bag but I think it would look great.

Obviously, I'm not a mom, so I don't know how much you need to carry when you have a baby but I'm pretty sure everything will fit in there. It's HUGE.
I hope she will like it !

And yes, he LOVES bags.

New quilt

The reason why it's been so quiet around here is because I am really really busy at school right now.
We are leaving for 6 weeks at the end of this week for our intership (OMG) so we have a lot of homeworks to do before that.

Interships.. me, 5"4, 120lbs in front of a classroom full of teenage boys
(15 boys, 4 girls between 15 and 18).
Scary !

I haven't been sewing a lot so that another reason why I haven't blogged a lot.
But, I did make a  bitnof progress on my Scrappy Trip Around The World quilt.
I'm not convinced though.

Remember that I'm doing a little exchange with the girl who's making my logo/business cards, etc ?
This is what she sent me as an inspiration :

Inspiring, isn't it ?
She wants feathers, birds, woodgrain, leaves, mustard yellow, aqua/mint, grey.
I love making quilts for others because it allows me to use fabric/colors I love but probably would never use for myself just because I can't make a quilt everytime I like a color combination, right ?

I also bought fabric to make Tova tops. I've had the pattern for a few weeks months.

So this is what's going on right now.
Hopefully, I'll be able to get rid of all my homeworks in the next 2 weeks and then I'll be able to sew almost every night !
That would make me REALLY happy !

I'll let you know how it goes with those kids.

MOC

So here it is, I want to start a little company.
With a brand name and a logo and business cards and all.

I'm currently in contact with a friend of my sister who is an illustrator.
She makes the cutest drawing ever. We're currently discussing to find
an arrangement that will make us both happy.

I'm quite excited I must tell you.
I get how people feel when they ask for a custom quilt now :)

It is scary though.
What if people don't buy my products because they thing it's too expensive ?
And what if I have too many orders and people just go somewhere else
because it takes too long for me to make their order ?

And I need to figure out what I want to sell.
Baby stuff ? Only quilts ? Pillows ? Whatever people want ?
Am I going to be able to say no to orders if it's something I'm not interested in making ?
And what am I going to say to people who ask for "discount" because they know me ?

I talked about it with my boyfriend the other day and he is incredibly supportive.
He has a degree in business and management so he definitely sees the business side of it while I think about all the fabric I will be allowed to buy "because it's for orders".

My dream ?
Being able to work at the restaurant only in the morning (and be home by 2pm !).
I'm not there yet but yes, that would be my dream.

I made a board for my sister's friend so she can get to know me and what I like.
Here's just a sample of what's in there.

As for the title ? That's going to be my "name".
MOC for Marika Ouellet Creations.
Short, easy to remember, works in english and in french.

Any advice you want to share with me ?

2.06.2013

Hi !

Hi ! My name is Marika and this is my blog.

Joking, it hasn't been THAT long
(in my head, it's been forever since I last blogged, but it's only been 5 days)
I don't have much to say, just a few random things...

Ready ?

1. Some fabric came in the mail today ! Love mail days.

This little stack brings to $150 the amount of money I spent on fabric this month.

My excuse ? I love those feathers and I had no elephants just yet. Those dots are my favorite too.
And do I need an excuse for more text print ?
I'm still waiting on this print and this print.
They're both going to become Tova tops. I'm excited !

2. I'm still making those pouches.

And I don't think I'm done just yet. But I don't mind, they're fun and easy to make.

3. Made myself a hoop. Fun and easy too :)

4. I also made a bunch of burp cloths today but I didn't take a picture yet.
Best time to do that is at 2pm. The light is at it's best.

They are for pregnant friends. They are both having boys (I knew it..)

5. I miss making quilts.
I love me a fresh-out-of-the-dryer crinkly quilt.
There's something special about it don't you think ?

6. It's funny when people I don't know from my class (we're around 100 separated in 3 classes) add me on Facebook to look at my pictures (I put pictures about the stuff I make and that's how people contact me to ask me to make something for them). It just happened a minute ago.
That's also why I've been making so many pouches ! If you didn't know already, the medium sized ones are perfect for pencils (and girls with 100 pencils).

7. I need to wash the dishes because he made dinner. That's our deal.
We had salmon stuffed with cream cheese and spinach topped with breadcrumbs and parmesan. It was good.
Ok,
So goodnight !!

2.01.2013

A Lovely Year of Finishes - February

So I didn't do very well last month (February already!!!).
I'm going to do better this month, I promise.

So my project this month is to finish this bag I started last night.
It's for a girl in my class, she picked the purple fabric and I suggested the green woodgrain and solid aqua.
She was very very easy to "work" with, I love that.

I need to make the inside and the straps. She wants two sets of strap (one longer and two shorter on both sides). But I already have a plan hehehe.

I'm linking up with Fiber of All Sorts today!

1.31.2013

I shouldn't have

You guys, I drank the kool-aid.
Yup, I started my own Trip Around the World quilt !

I started with this stack of scraps
I pulled every piece of fabric that could give me at least one 2.5"x16" strip.
I spent a few hours last night cutting all 180 strips of fabric needed to make a 60"x70" quilt.

180 strips you guys. And I don't even feel like it made a difference in my scrap bins !
In fact, I feel like I created even more scraps !

This morning, I finished assembling those strips into blocks.
Now I just need to iron them. And cut them into more stips and sew them back together.
Why oh why did I do this ?

I don't even know if I will like the result. I'm not a scrappy person. I like to carefully chose my fabric and then decide where each print will go.
For those ?
I had my stack of strips and I picked two and sewed them together, no matter how ugly they looked together. I only made sure one print wouldn't end up twice in the same block.
I even used fabric I don't like !

We will see... If I hate it, I'll sell it or give it away.

I forgot to show you this bag I made for my partner in the Sew Sew Modern swap.
It's already on it's way to her..

There is a little bit of Heather Ross, Anna Maria Horner, Denyse Schmidt and Henna Garden.
There is linen, text and chevron. And there is aqua, orange and those AMH feathers (inside).
All things my partner  likes.

I'm still amazed at how Noodlehead patterns are easy to make.
Now I want to try that Go Anywhere tote and the Divided Basket (they would be great to store my patterns!) and I can't seem to stop making those Open Wide Zippered pouches.

Enough for today !
I'm going back to bed. I'm waking up so early this week that I'm tired at 9!
